Science is not a menace to civilization

Science is not a menace to civilization. On the contrary, science itself is a part of civilization.
Referring to civilization, we must first be familiar with the definition of it. A civilization is a society or culture group normally defined as a complex society characterized by the practice of agriculture and settlement in cities. But in reality, a civilization is not that simple, it is actually comprised of many cultural conventions and spirits and everything that civilians create. To some extent, it is a unique unit that differs from other cultures. All civilians under the civilization uphold their peculiar spirit and their common identity. Once a civilization becomes extinct, the whole group of people would vanish forever, or they have changed another completely unfamiliar way of life.
So, as science is counted to be a kind of creation by human beings, it is a part of a civilization. I fully agree the perspective that science is like any other invention of mankind. As the development of human’s society, the presence of science is inevitable. Even if the form of science did not come as we expected, another alternative would come instead of the presence of science because it has been an overwhelming tide for such kind of “invention” to come out.
Science itself is innocent. Everything can be used for good or for evil. Let’s raise a simplest example on diamond. Diamond is resplendent and dazzling. If we intend to make good use of it, it could be the hardest substance in the world that have ever explored; it can make a penniless vagrant change into a millionaire suddenly; it can be polished and embellished into a invaluable diamond ring which represents the permanent love and gifted to the one you love. Nevertheless, it can also cause murder, assassination and blackmail, such evil crime to become “blood diamond”. Though the simple example, we can deduce that science is now trapped into the same embarrassing situation as “diamonds ’do. The reason why a lot of people condemn the failures of science is because it is used for evil more than good. We must not only see the hindrance that science has made, there is still good and benefits that it has brought us, especially for civilization. The internet actually brings us a more convenient gateway to communicate with each other, even for two persons who are millions miles away from each other.

Democracy cannot create absolute stability of society

Democracy is a system of government by which political sovereignty is retained by the people and either exercised directly by citizens or through their elected representatives. In other words, a democracy is the government of the people by the people.
Nowadays, there are many countries in the world which use democracy as their policies. Some of them, like Singapore and Korea, have successfully achieved prosperity. But some though have tried hard to implement democracy; still do not have prominent progress.
What kind of society is considered stable? In my opinion, the country must be affluent, and also united. If people suffered in poverty and formed many factions which hide different intentions behind the semblance of accord, the country would not exist for long.
Democracy provides each citizen with equal right to vote or to speak. Their elected representatives would fulfill their wishes. Then there will be no potential riotous factor and nation-disintegrated possibility existed.
So, democracy does create stability of society. One example is the feedback system in Singapore which looks at ideas from people for improvement in public service. With democracy, people are free to express their ideas and suggestions to the transparent and fair government. Some of their contributions from people can be very effective that may considerably help the government to overcome some of the problems. Simply to say, this policy helps the country to have positive changes and development.
This and the consensus of people promote social stability not only economically but also politically. This also explains why democratic states are ranked high in the 2005 Human Development Index.
But on the other hand, democracy does not always create stability.
In India, although it is developing at a fast rate, many people still live in poverty. The rich are getting richer while the poor are still being marginalized and are not able to maintain a decent standard of living.
The condition of Indian economic is pretty poor and how can we expect that it has a stable society?
What goes wrong is the corruption and money politics. Even during election, celebrities were roped in for running for seats. The parties were offering cash ranging from 50,000 rupees to 500,000 rupees a day. Gradually, the high cost unable the Indian economic to finance normally, which made the nation unstable.
Politically, as for the election which is said to be dominated by democracy, it is also quite unfair. The candidates could use all devices to persuade the voters. Such as in Indonesia, millions of T-shirts, bearing party logos or politicians’ mug shots were handed out, and more creative camps even distributed sneakers, cigarettes or bottled water. The most important aspect of good government is having able men in charge. Able men are selected from election, but according to what Lee Kuan Yew has said, “It is very difficult when you have popular elections, as a candidate is not judged by his ability to govern but by his persuasive power.” Through democracy, leaders can be selected in compliance with the willing of the people, but if the leader is able to maintain a stable nation is still a question.
In all, democracy can be a two-side knife, as soon as people get rights to vote, to speak and to take part in more activities, the potential instability gradually emerges. Since, not all people can have one consensus, there must be majority and minority, and then the conflict between them would not come to an end.
So, we have to apply democracy in a proper way, and then social stability might then be temporarily created.

Punishment for youth crime

The example dismays me a lot:John Doe ,who was 15 years old,was charged with Grand Theft Auto and Possession Over 1000 dollars.When he was asked the reason why he committed this crime,he responded,"I did it for something to do-it was all for fun."And he went on to say,"I knew the law.I knew the worst thing that could happen was serving some community hours because I was a young offender and it would be my first offence."
He felt nothing even insensitive both when committing the crime and after being arrestted.I felt sorry for his act.But I know he is just one of those who are still young ,regarding committing crime as fun .In the past,people thought that it was ignorance which caused teenagers to commit crime,such as to pilfer,to rob,to fight and even more sever-sexual harassment.But now things are going opposite,the reason why so many teenagers are going astray is that the know the law for them quite well,they have no fear for the punishment,no scruple for their rest of life.So they want to try something new,something exiting,something would make himself get rid of the boring life,as a result and due to the tolerance and concern society provides to teenagers,they absolutely choose an unfamiliar way to satisfy themselves-crime.
So I think first we should establish a new feasible legislation,which can deter those who feel nothing even fun committing crime.The Federal Justice Minister has said that,"Throwing children or teenagers who break the law into prisons designed for adults makes no sense."Even I can not imagine those teenagers who have committed crimes squatting in the corner of the jail for adults,trembling frighteningly.This can cause them a series of aberrant personality.So I think authorities should build a special place for those teenagers who have committed crimes.Give them serious punishment which could let them never forget the lesson.Let every teenager know that how severe they commit crime!
And one most important thing must not be denied,that is put education at the first place.A rational view has been spoken by Justice Minister, McLellan."The legislation is part of a wider strategy dealing with youth crime that doesn't always involve judges and jails, but community-based efforts to prevent kids from becoming criminals."
